Whittling Chip Requirements

Whittling Chip (用刀須知)是Bear den (三年級) 的 Bear Claws 任務的一部分,也是Webelos/AOL (四、五年級) Cast Iron Chef 任務的一部分。

  1. Know the safety rules for handling a knife.
  2. Make a carving with a pocketknife. Work with your den leader or other adult when doing this.
  3. Read, understand, and promise to abide by the “Pocketknife Pledge.”

1. Know the safety rules:

  1. A knife is a tool, not a toy.
  2. Know how to sharpen a knife. A sharp knife is safer because it is less likely to slip and cut you.
  3. Keep the blade clean.
  4. Never carry an open pocketknife.
  5. When you are not using your knife, close it and put it away.
  6. Keep your knife dry.
  7. When you are using the cutting blade, do not try to make big shavings or chips. Easy does it.
  8. Make a safety circle: Before you pick up your knife to use it, stretch your arm out and turn in a circle. If you can’t touch anyone else, it is safe to use your knife.

Important note:

  • Scouts should NEVER take their pocketknife to school. They shouldn’t even put it in their school backpack.
  • Scouts can take their pocketknife to den or pack meeting only when they are told by the den leader to do so.

3. Pocket Knife Pledge

  1. I will treat my pocketknife with the respect due a useful tool.
  2. I will always close my pocketknife and put it away when not in use.
  3. I will not use my pocketknife when it might injure someone near me.
  4. I promise never to throw my pocketknife for any reason.
  5. I will use my pocketknife in a safe manner at all times.

After reading and promising to honor their pledge, scouts can sign and carry their pledge cards in their left pocket of the Cub Scout uniform.


Scouts are awarded a Whittling Chip patch that is worn on the pocket flap of the right pocket of the Cub Scout uniform. It is considered a temporary patch.
